The Indianapolis Air Show is a yearly event held at the Mt. Comfort Airport located on the far east side of Indianapolis. This great Indianapolis attraction combines all the educational and entertainment properties of Indianapolis museums, Indianapolis performing arts, and Indianapolis festivals into one exciting day.
Visitors to this exciting aeronautical Indianapolis event will be dazzled by the various aircraft performances; the air show also features ground attractions, including an antique car show, military displays, veteran reenactments of the Vietnam War, Korean War, and World War II, NASA exhibits, and a WWII aircraft museum. Various vendors are also on site to offer many souvenirs and air-related goods for visitors to purchase.
A 5+ hour air show will be the highlight for Indianapolis kids and adults alike, as the various aircraft take flight to entertain the crowds with death defying aerial acrobatics. One highlight of the show is the U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight, which shows off the evolution of airpower over the years. The Heritage Flight program was established in 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Air Force. Modern fighters fly in close formation with airplanes from the WWII, Korean, and Vietnam eras.

Another delight of the Indianapolis Air Show is the U.S Navy Legacy Flight, which involves modern fighters flying in close formation with WWII, Korean, and Vietnam vintage Navy and Marine Corps fighters. The Navy has determined that these fly-bys at air shows have greatly aided their recruiting efforts, and so they continue to be a popular display at the Indianapolis Air Show.
Another crowd favorite is the performance by the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team. The crowd will be awed by the team’s precision freefall and parachute maneuvers. For more than 44 years, the Golden Knights have been amazing audiences with their wide array of sky performances. The Golden Knights are yet another way the Army effectively recruits new members, by showing them the teamwork and leadership involved in a sport such as competitive skydiving.
Other exhibits at the Indianapolis Air Show include the NASA – Journey to Tomorrow traveling display. An interactive environment has been established in a 53 foot trailer, enabling NASA to bring the experience and history of flight to groups nationwide. Hands on activities and digital learning stations have been put in place to allow guests to learn more about space travel and the solar system. A lunar simulator is also available for visitors to experience first-hand the thrill and excitement of space travel.
Exhibits like the Virtual Army Experience allows visitors to experience the Army and its fight on terrorism first-hand. This 19,500 foot exhibit is a life size virtual world; it’s a state-of-the-art training environment used by the Army to highlight soldier occupations, new technologies, and various missions in a fast-paced, completely immersive simulation.
In addition to the air performances and exhibits, visitors to the Indianapolis Air Show can also enjoy a hot air balloon show and rides, a car and truck show, a golf outing, a photo contest, a military aircraft ground exhibit, and much more. Pilots with their own small planes are welcomed and encouraged to fly in to enjoy and participate in the air show activities.
