The Fountain Square neighborhood, just 1-1/2 miles from downtown Indianapolis, is one of six officially designated cultural districts in Indianapolis. The other five are: Broad Ripple Village, the Wholesale District, Canal and White River State Park, Mass Ave and Indiana Avenue.

Fountain Square, like many other sectors of the Midwestern town, possesses a profound history. It was, in fact, the very first
historic district to become a center of commerce in the city. It also played a significant role in the development of theater.
Presently, Fountain Square is in the process of blossoming into its own, with new Indianapolis art galleries, Indianapolis shopping and unique businesses at every turn. Inside the historic Theatre Building, visitors will find duckpin bowling, dining and swing dancing and outside there are several art galleries, such as the Alias Gallery, the Big Car Gallery, the Galerie Penumbra and the Domont Studio. Offbeat and just a little funky, this district’s slogan is “anything but square!”
