Asante Children’s Theatre of Indianapolis

The reason for being for the Asante Children’s Theatre of Indianapolis, Indiana is two-fold: Firstly, this organization seeks to further the understanding of the African and African-American cultures through the medium of live performance. Secondly, they concentrate on Indianapolis children between the ages of 9 and 21, with an eye toward stopping detrimental or delinquent activities in their tracks.

The Asante Children’s Theatre uses different methods to attain their goals, including Indianapolis music, theatrical arts, and dance performance and the oral traditions through storytelling.

Asante kids learn skills they will use for a lifetime, even if they never end up performing at all in any of the many venues for Indianapolis theater. The ethics of practice, the discipline required to learn lines or dance steps, the ability to communicate with others in a positive, creative fashion to others are all examples of these lifelong skills and values the Asante Theatre instills.

A moment’s thought regarding the positive effects of the arts on young kids is more than enough convincing of the good Asante is doing here. They have proven time and again that involvement in the performing arts in Indianapolis builds a type of character that rejects delinquent behavior, opting instead for positive and life-affirming choices.

The Asante Children’s Theatre of Indy is proud to make its home in Freetown Village, the Afro-American cultural center in Indianapolis. The Freetown Village mission statement is “to educate the public about African American lives and culture in Indiana through living history performances, the collection and preservation of artifacts, exhibits and allied programs.” Obviously, the two groups’ goals are homogeneous.

This Asante group is made of of three branches: the ACT Prep, the ACT Academy and the Asante Touring Company. Below are brief descriptions of all three.

Asante ACT Prep

This group offers two summer camps, one named Freetown Village Day Camp, convened at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church on 46th and Emerson, and the other in their home facility at Christamore House. Details can be requested by calling (317) 631-1870. Recently Asante redesigned their Prep program specifically to teach fundamentals, then provide a venue for using them in practice and performance.

The Asante Children’s Theatre‘s ACT

This academy accepts kids between 9 and 21 years old into its workshops and productions. Auditions are required for this highly esteemed academy. Call (317) 297-0020.

The Asante Touring Company

The ATC takes their craft out into the community of Metro Indy. Their aim is basically to provide paying opportunities for those over the age of 18 to teach and perform the live arts in Indianapolis. They’re leaders in their field, and they prepare Indianapolis kids not only for a shot at professional Indianapolis theatre, but for life.
