The Pheonix Theatre is located in Indianapolis, IndianaA central part of the revitalization of Mass Ave, an Indianapolis cultural district, The Phoenix Theatre is a professional contemporary theater in Indianapolis that features a number of issue-oriented plays each year. A group of local artists founded The Phoenix Theatre in 1983 as a way to enhance the Indianapolis performing arts community. Attaining professional status in 1993 by joining the Actors Equity Association, the Phoenix is one of only three central Indiana theatres with Equity status.

Housed within a fully renovated turn-of-the-century church donated by arts patron J. Scott Keller, The Phoenix Theatre is located in the historic Chatham Arch residential district. With a commitment to professional productions in an intimate atmosphere, The Phoenix Theatre has two performance spaces. The main stage space seats 130, and the cabaret-style Frank & Katrina Basile Theatre seats 75.

Much like the legendary bird, The Phoenix Theatre is reborn each season and maintains its claim as a theatre with no boundaries. With performances such as “Drunk Enough to Say I Love You?” and “The Dos and Don’ts of Time Travel,” the theatre strives to provide productions with a witty sense of style and facilitate social awareness through its performances. It is also one of five regular participant in the indyFringe Festival, along with the American Cabaret Theatre, ComedySportz Indianapolis, the Theatre on the Square, and the Murat Theatre. IndyFringe is a celebration of quirky performance art that takes place every summer in downtown Indianapolis, and the Phoenix Theatre’s involvement only cements the theatre’s tradition of offbeat productions.
