It is a well-known fact that Indianapolis is a hub for both great art and great sports. There are numerous Indianapolis art galleries, like the Hoosier Salon, 4 Star Gallery, and the Eckert and Ross Fine Art Gallery, but only one museum that combines the beauty of art with the excitement of sports: The National Art Museum of Sport.

Located within IUPUI in downtown Indianapolis, the National Art Museum of Sport is relatively close to many other Indianapolis attractions, making it a fantastic place to visit in your travels around Indy. It has one of the largest collections of art about sports in the world, and features hundreds of different paintings and sculptures, ranging from heavily detailed portraits of specific athletes, such as Peyton Manning and Reggie Miller, to more abstract stylings of the glory of sports. It is one of the best Indianapolis museums.

The National Art Museum of Sport began life in Madison Square Garden in 1959, but moved to Indianapolis in 1990. Once in Indianapolis, known for its legendary sports teams like the Indianapolis Colts and the Indiana Pacers, the art collection of the Museum of Sport almost tripled. In 2009, the museum will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The National Art Museum of Sport firmly believes that sports and art are not mutually exclusive, that the graceful curves of the human body and motion lend themselves easily to the similar curves of the paintbrush across canvas. With that goal in mind, this museum offers some great examples of both Indianapolis art and art around the world. It’s View Postcertainly one of the best Indianapolis art museums.

The museum is free of charge, so if you’re an avid Indianapolis sports fan and your wallet is empty from hours of Indianapolis shopping and sightseeing, it’s a great place to stop by.
