The Jazz Kitchen: Hot Music Spot and Restaurant

Indianapolis has long been known as a hotspot for jazz music. It has been a part of the jazz scene since its origins in the early 20th century, and the city has many hometown jazz heroes, such as Slide Hampton, Jimmy Coe, Flo Garvin, and Pookie Johnson. The Jazz Kitchen Lounge and Restaurant, one of the hallmarks of Indianapolis culture, has a firm position in that history.

The Jazz Kitchen Lounge and Restaurant, nestled on College Avenue just a few short blocks from Broad Ripple Village and Butler University, presents a showcase of talented jazz musicians every week. According to Down Beat magazine, a long-standing and venerable jazz publication, the Jazz Kitchen is one of the top-100 jazz clubs in the world.

This Indianapolis music venue is serious about its commitment to musical excellence. All talking is restricted to the lounge area so as not to spoil the musical soundscape of the performers. This policy allows for a relaxed, acoustically pleasing atmosphere.

The Jazz Kitchen Lounge and Restaurant presents a variety of different local and national acts every week. Indianapolis pianist Steve Allee, New York composer Marco Benevento, Indy violinist Cathy Morris, virtuoso sax player Frank Glover, and Indy trumpeter Pharez Whitted have all graced the Kitchen’s stage.

But the venue is not all about jazz.  Every Thursday night, the Jazz Kitchen hosts a Latin dance party that runs for five hours and features a live DJ. In addition, hip hop, salsa, and roots music have all made appearances at the Kitchen.
