The Young Actors Theatre is where some of Indy’s best actors and actresses are trained as children. The YAT is the oldest not-for-profit theatre in all of Indianapolis and is located inside the historic Athenaeum Building in downtown Indianapolis. It shares the Athenaeum with the local favorite Rathskeller Restaurant and now occupies the same space previously used by the American Cabaret Theatre.
In 1976, Charlotte Kaufman founded the YAT to give children and young adults an opportunity to study the craft of acting. Since that time, the YAT has been an important feeder source for Indianapolis Performing Arts Indianapolis theatre companies and Indianapolis performing arts theatre venues.
With Fall, Spring and Summer programs the Young Actors Theatre strives to teach its young performers confidence, self-discipline and creativity. Classes for both children and teenagers are separated by grades to give the young thespians a comfort level and to allow their growth to be shared with peers. For children in kindergarten to grade two there is YATZ YOUNGSTERZ, for grades three to seven there is YATZ KIDZ, and for those in and around high school age there is YATZ TEENZ. The theatre has recently produced such shows as The Spell of Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. While the titles and stories are the same, the YAT has a way of applying a modern feel to all shows.
Students learn the art of acting in classroom settings as well as rehearsals for a full scale production. Each term a final performance is open to the public in which every student is cast in a speaking role. The Young Actors Theatre is just one of the many venues in Indy that draws on the local talent to further the arts in Indianapolis, and a lynchpin in the long list of great developmental programs for Indianapolis kids.
