Sylvia Sullivan Gray, a member of the Indianapolis art community, says that making art is the same as figuring out a puzzle. Her method is to work with her initial ideas of forms and colors, then step back and stare at them until other images make themselves known to her.
It’s akin to Michelangelo’s method of negative sculpting, in which he cut away everything that wasn’t the sculpture. In a way, the artist that creates this way allows the artwork to create itself.
Sylvia Sullivan Gray considers herself and her work to be intuitive. It is at once representative of the form and abstract in its overall quality. She works with textile art as well as painting, and each one has influenced the other.
Her pieces are often full of geometric forms and shapes, and always interesting. They are a unique example of Indianapolis art, especially her wearable art gallery comprised of fiber art.
Sylvia has been heavily involved in the Indianapolis community. She studied at Indiana University – Purdue University (IUPUI) and at the Indianapolis Art Center. She has also held workshops at Indianapolis public schools, the Circle Centre Mall, and the Indianapolis Art Center. Sylvia’s work has been exhibited in several Indianapolis art galleries and Indianapolis attractions, including the Indiana State Fair, the Indianapolis Art Center Faculty Show, the Indianapolis Zoo, the Columbia Club Hotel, and Marian College.
