Union Station houses Crown Plaza Hotel

The Crowne Plaza Hotel in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, is a living part of the fascinating history of Indy. This elegant, upscale hotel is listed in the “National Register of Historic Places,” and contains within its walls the downtown site of Indianapolis’ Union Station, the very first Union train station in the world.

Some of the many convenient attractions and things to do and see are: the Circle Centre Mall, Claypool Court, the Indiana Convention Center & RCA Dome, Conseco Fieldhouse, the Indianpolis Zoo & White River Gardens, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway & Hall of Fame Museum, the Eiteljorg Museum, the NCAA Hall of Champions, the Mass Ave cultural sector and The Children’s Museum, not to mention all the fabulous Indy downtown nightlife.

This historic facility is more than a hotel. People come from far and wide to travel the rails of the Union Station, which shares the Crowne Plaza Hotel space. The two giants teamed up to create 26 special hotel rooms made of authentically grand Pullman train cars sitting pretty for guests to rent. Each of these train car rooms sport the name of a personality from the early 1900s and was decorated using memorabilia about that person.

One of the most unique highlights of this extraordinary hotel is its white statuary, placed in different, unexpected locales throughout the premises. These are the famous “ghost travelers,” life-sized and frozen in a moment of time long gone. Visitors might catch a glimpse a pair of them perpetually enacting a shoeshine, or some ghost kids peeking over a boxcar at them.

Continuing the theme that is their strength, the Crowne Plaza‘s public dining spot is called “Pullman’s Restaurant & Lounge,” a posh, comfortable restaurant with a neat vintage flavor.

The enormous hotel itself boasts 273 rooms, an on-site health and fitness center, an indoor pool, a gift shop and 50,000 square feet for meetings of every size, for every purpose. Recently renovated (in 2007), the Crowne Plaza has three floors of beautifully appointed guest rooms with upgraded creature comforts, and is widely considered one of the chief travel magnets in the Midwest.
