Indianapolis Basketball: A Hoosier Tradition

For anybody who has seen the movie Hoosiers, Indiana is all about lonely looking basketball hoops stuck in empty cornfields under a gray winter sky. It’s true, residents of Indiana eat, breathe, and live basketball.

Indianapolis basketball is much the same; Indianapolis residents yearn for the opening of hoops season, for the varnished smell of freshly cleaned gyms, for the roar of the home crowd echoing through the beams of a vaulted ceiling, for the swish of the net when a perfect shot slips through the hole or the ke-rang of the rim that signals the ball is up for grabs. Indianapolis sports fans hold their breath in living rooms, in arenas, in Indianapolis bars, and in Indianapolis restaurants as the clock ticks down to that last, desperate, all for nothing shot.

This is Indianapolis basketball.

Below is a list of the basketball teams in Indianapolis, from the many highly ranked college squads to the pride of Indianapolis, its two professional teams.
