The IUPUI Women’s Basketball team has been entertaining Indianapolis residents and students since 1975.  Head Coach Shann Hart will be celebrating her fifth season with the Jaguars this year, along with her staff of Chanel Spriggs, Jenny DeMuth and Millette Green.

The Indianapolis sports team’s record for the 2007-08 season was 17-16, and 8-5 for home games.  Affiliated with the NCAA Division I as part of The Summit League, the team plays in The Jungle with the capacity for 1,215 fans.  Average attendance for last season was 456 fans per home game. Average points per game for the Jags in 2007-08 were 57.9.  2.5 three-point field goals, 35.3 rebounds, 4.2 blocks and 10.6 steals per game were achieved last year.  The Indiana University – Purdue University (IUPUI) women are currently riding a 6-game home winning streak.

Returning players to watch this year include Forward Jernisha Cann, Center Julia Whitted, and Guards Nicole James and Brykeesha Tate.  Cann is a senior this year, and started all 33 games last season.  She averaged 12.7 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Whitted, a junior, also started all 33 games and averaged 14.4 games, 8.8 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game.  New players added to the Jags’ roster for this year include Kiara Butler of Evansville, Indiana, Quanisha Turner of Sacramento, CA, Janna Eichelberger of West Columbia, SC, and Elizabeth Mercer of Thorntown, Indiana.

The women’s last post-season opponent was Oral Roberts in 2008, which resulted in a loss for The Summit League Championship. This loss, however, resulted in a new record as the runner-up position in the league.  Post-tournament ceremonies named Cann and Whitted co-MVPs. Whitted was honored with the Offensive Player of the Year award, and Cann received the Defensive Player of the Year. Honors naming Nicole James as the Unsung Hero of the Jags prompted an invitation for her to join The Summit League All-Freshman Team this year.
