Classic Ragtime Society: Reviving the Past in Indianapolis

If you’re planning to be in Indianapolis over the summer months, a fun Indianapolis event for the entire family to attend is the Classic Ragtime Society of Indiana’s annual festival.  Every August, the organization comprises a series of concerts, dance demonstrations and seminars to spread the enjoyment of class ragtime music in Indianapolis. It is one of the most original Indianapolis fairs and festivals.

The American ragtime genre, ruling between 1890 and 1920, is believed to serve as the root beginnings for jazz, blues, stride and boogie woogie.  Popular composers during the era included Scott Joplin, James Scott and Joseph Lamb.

The 2008 festival was held primarily at the Indiana Historical Society; 2009 dates and ticket information can be found at www.indianarag.org.
