IUPUI Softball: Queens of the Mound

Maggie Calcaterra is leading the IUPUI Softball team as head coach for the third straight season in 2008.  Assisted by Owen Chew and Kristin Zacher, Calcaterra brings expertise from her BS in Education from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, which she earned in 1997.  She later went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology in 2004.  Coach Calcaterra has received city-wide acclaim in Indianapolis for her intent of improving academic standings and community service activities of her team members.

The IUPUI Softball team has made significant contributions in the past two years to provide relief for victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. The team has participated in two programs, “Race for the Cure” and “Light the Night”.  During 2006, the team’s coach was an instrumental force in bringing the PFX Tour to Indy with former USA Softball star Dot Richardson.  This tour was designed to bring professional and amateur softball athletes to compete at the same events.

Calcaterra has been successful at attracting several transfer students to the program in her career at Indiana University – Purdue University (IUPUI), including infielder Meaghan Raynew, Texan Jenny Boyts, and former LaSalle pitcher Lea Corcoran.  Her goal of increasing team speeds, athletic ability and diversity of the roster has led to an elite Indianapolis sports team of more than 20 current players.

The team’s record in 2006 was 13-37, with two All Mid-Continent Conference honorees and one of the best all around players in IUPUI‘s Division I history with Devan Craig.  During Calcaterra’s second year, the team improved to 14-32.  Sarah Needy ended her career with that season as the program’s all-time leader in stolen bases.

IUPUI’s softball team, under Calcaterra’s leadership, also recruited highly respected outfielder Mia Etti and middle infielder Stacy Hart.  The 2008-09 team included a JUCO catcher, two pitcher/infielders and a pair of versatile outfielders.

Calcaterra follows Julie Pratt’s six-year legacy with the program, and stands as the coach with the fourth highest wins with the team.  Nick Kellum, who coached IUPUI Softball for 14 years, stands above the rest with 518 total wins.
