Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana, the non-profit organization serving America’s youth by matching volunteer mentors with Indianapolis children in need of adult interaction and guidance, serves central Indiana youth from its Indianapolis, Indiana location.
The organization is a merger of Big Brothers of Greater Indianapolis, founded in 1970 and Big Sisters of Central Indiana, founded in 1971. The two organizations merged in 2002 to pool its resources and provide program service to young people from Marion, Johnson, and Hamilton counties.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana works with children on a referral basis. Youth ages 8 to 18 are accepted into the program from diverse backgrounds and economic statuses including those children with incarcerated parents, living with a non-parent guardian, children from single-parent households, and youth with extenuating circumstances that leave them in need of adult guidance and friendship.
Mentors are adult volunteers who wish to donate their time to helping build character and provide guidance to area youth in need. This is one of the foremost the long list of excellent Indianapolis charities, and perhaps one of the most important, since it is in the non-profit business of changing kid’s lives for the better and giving them the best possible chances to succeed.
