The Stutz Building houses the Stutz Art Space in Indianapolis Downtown

Each November, Indianapolis arts patrons flock to the historic Stutz building in downtown Indianapolis for the annual kickoff to the holiday season, the Stutz Artists Association Holiday Show. The free event, hosted and organized by the Stutz Artists Association, features the works of more than 40 Indianapolis artists, as well as light refreshments and music. One-of-a-kind artworks are for sale at the Holiday Show, along with jewelry, sculptures, and more, and portions of the proceeds benefit local charities.

The Stutz Artists Association, which exists to promote and encourage its member artists and the Indianapolis art community, is one of the largest associations of working artists in Indiana. The Association created the StutzArtSpace, a 1,600-square-foot visual art center in the Stutz Business Center, in January of 2008, to offer classes and workshops, as well as gallery space, to local artists and Indianapolis residents.

StutzArtSpace is only one of more than 70-plus businesses located in the center, which was created to house small- to mid-sized Indy offices for graphic designers, artists, and creative entrepreneurs. The 400,000-square-foot building’s history dates back to the early 1900s, when Harry Stutz, founder of the Stutz Motorcar Company, built and headquartered his car company there. Stutz, famous for his Bearcat automobile that was built in his three-story factory and raced in the first Indianapolis 500 Mile Race (theIndy 500), was known for his innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, which carries on through the work of the building’s current tenants today.
