Mudkids are a popular Indianapolis music group which has performed locally, regionally and nationally for over a decade. Rusty Redenbacher, aka Choc, and Elp-Mass are currently working on producing their fifth album, a genre bending full length titled We Are Dynamic and People Like Us.
In the past, the hip-hop duo has performed with such nationally known acts as Run DMC, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Rage Against the Machine, Digital Underground and the Wu Tang Clan. Mudkids are known for their comedic lyrics, their tendency to break into impromptu freestyle sessions onstage, and their old-school hip-hop beats and song structures; all these combined throw the audience into a frenzy, inducing insane sing-alongs and dance parties.

Redenbacher first started as an Indy musician in a popular local funk rock group called Birdmen of Alcatraz in the 90’s. The Birdmen performed at the X-Fest Music Festival, The Vogue Nightclub, and the Midwest Music Summit during their music career. Later, a reunion in 2002 prompted renewed interest in the group, and they’ll still occasionally play a local venue in downtown Indianapolis.

It’s for Mudkids that Redenbacher and Elp-Mass are known, however. Redenbacker handles vocals while Elp-Mass spins the turntables and deals with production. They have released four albums, 4trackmind, Upward, Higher, and Basementality. With each new offering, the duo has further refined their sound. This musical evolution continues on their forthcoming LP, We are Dynamic and People Like Us. “Shades I’m Fly” has a latin jam band feel to it before the Elp-Mass drops the sick bass beat over the top, while “MK On Your Speakers” melds Asian strings with Redenbacher’s hip hop melody.
Mudkids frequently perform at The Jazz Kitchen and other popular clubs in Indianapolis. In 2009, they performed at the Midsummer Music Fest in Muncie, Indiana, the Broad Ripple Art Fair, and the Forecastle Festival in Louisville, Kentucky.
