The Indiana War Memorial Plaza Historic District may seem like a mouthful to say, but more importantly, it’s an eyeful to see. The district is home to several historical monuments, including Veterans Memorial Plaza, and is considered a major part of Indianapolis history in its own right.
Located just north of the Indiana War Memorial, Veterans Memorial Plaza, also known as Obelisk Square, was constructed in 1930. The area is a public park-like setting that underwent a facelift in a 1975 beautification effort for the Bicentennial Declaration of Independence celebration. Featuring a paved plaza, grassy areas, and a 100-foot tall obelisk rising from the middle of a 100-foot diameter fountain as a centerpiece, Veterans Memorial Plaza is the impressive and proud symbol for downtown Indianapolis.
The obelisk and fountain within Veterans Memorial Plaza honor all past and present Indiana veterans. Constructed of Berwick black granite, it was designed to represent the nation’s aspirations. At the base are four bronze plaques that represent the American fundamental values of law, science, religion, and education. Nearby, the American flag flies above flags from each of the nation’s 50 states.
The Veterans Memorial Plaza attracts visitors from all around and is a popular gathering place for outdoor events in downtown Indianapolis, including the annual 4th Fest on Independence Day and the Indianapolis Public Schools’ annual Back to School Festival.
