Attention all you Indianapolis Country music fans. If you’re not listening to the Wank and O’Brien Show on WLHK-97.1 HANK FM Radio, you should be. Not only are Dave O’Brien and his co-host, Ed Wank, a hilarious addition to your morning coffee, they’ve become an Indianapolis music lover’s staple in the AM.
If you were to take a leisurely stroll around Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, you would see the impressive Emmis Communications building, which houses our favorite comedic duo. HANK FM 97.1 is owned by Emmis, an Indianapolis media giant. This is where Ed Wank and Dave O’Brien spend their mornings spinning tunes and heckling callers with segments such as the “Senseless Survey.”
Dave O’Brien kicked off his radio career at the University of Virginia in 1985. (Take note, Butler and IUPUI students. If you want to start a career in radio, look no further than the campus radio station.) After graduation, Dave spent some time in Charlottesville, then eventually ended up in Indy, where he met up with Ed Wank.
In 1996, Indianapolis radio welcomed Dave O’Brien and Ed Wank with open arms, and in 2004, they officially became the poster boys for Hank FM’s enthusiastic and original style of broadcasting and became a part of Indianapolis history.
Dave and Ed are not only talented comedians, they’re also altruistic souls with a track record of giving back to their community. For example, the DJs took part in a free day saluting families of soldiers who currently serve or have served in the Middle East. The day featured the always-welcome Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders, the equally high-spirited (and easy on the eyes) Indianapolis Pacers Pacemates, and the teams’ mascots (Blue and Boomer, respectively.) This event was held at lovely outdoor O’Reilly Raceway Park.
Dave O’Brien and Ed Wank also participate in many events with Indianapolis nonprofits, such as “Once Upon a Cure,” which raises money for the American Cancer Society; a festival benefiting Habit for Humanity; and a 5k Run/Walk benefiting the Little Red Door Cancer Agency. The 5k begins at the impressive Indiana War Memorial Museum in downtown Indianapolis.
The biggest listeners of the Wank & O’Brien Show know that they can always count on their favorite comedians not only to lend a helping hand in the community, but to throw one of the biggest parties of the year. Skyconcert, which is put on by Hank FM, sets Country tunes in time with sparkling fireworks for a display that dazzles all the senses. Skyconcert ends the summer with a bang in late August, and is just one of the many Indianapolis events Dave O’Brien and Ed Wank host for Hank FM.
Dave and Ed have been expanding their fan base for almost ten years now, and the tried and true formula they’ve developed involving humor, enthusiasm, and a dedication to serving the people of Indianapolis only strengthens with time. Do yourself a favor and jump on the funnymen’s bandwagon now, and see why the Wank & O’Brien Show is one of the Circle City‘s hottest radio programs.
