In Indianapolis media, one of the names you’ll hear most frequently is that of Dave Smiley, host of WZPL’s morning show, the aptly named Smiley Morning Show. Every morning from 5:00am-10:00am, Indianapolis music fans can tune in for a mix of music and laughs. Smiley and his crew are guaranteed to make your morning brighter with their lighthearted chat, interviews with local personalities, comedians, and other performers in town. Other important elements are the Hollywood gossip updates that come courtesy of Greenwood, Indiana’s own Carlos Diaz, an entertainment reporter for Extra who calls in every morning on the show to dish the celebrity dirt.

The WZPL studios on the north side of Indy on Meridian Street are home to the lively morning crew that makes up the show, a carefree group headed up by Smiley. One of his cohorts is Mindy Winkler, the traffic guru whose name you might have heard before from her days cheering on the Indianapolis Colts, who now play at Lucas Oil Stadium. HIs cohost KJ has won viewers over with her commitment to causes in Indy, including the Riley Hospital for Children telethon the station hosts every year. Producers Weedman and B-Moore regularly throw in their two cents as well. Rounding out the crew is Paul Poteet, who Indianapolis citizens count on to bring them the weather forecast every morning. If you’d rather watch Paul predict the forecast than listen, you can also catch him on one of Indy’s favorite TV stations, Channel 13 Eyewitness News.
When Dave Smiley arrived on the Indianapolis scene in 2002, he came from an extensive background in radio. He fits right into the hopping nighttime Indianapolis culture; he’s often seen hanging out with fans in various staples of Indianapolis nightlife or in popular Northside haunts such as Champps Americana.
He keeps his show interesting for the loyal fans, and produces several weekly segments that the listeners look forward to on their way in to work, such as the Top Three Things You Need to Know, Smiley’s Word-of-the-Day, Whatever it Takes, and of course, the always-popular Diaz’s Dirt. Smiley has won numerous awards for his efforts in Indy, including Best Male Radio Personality from Indianapolis Woman and and Best Radio Morning Show from Nuvo, two highly respected Indianapolis magazines. He has become one of the most notable people in Indianapolis.
If you’re tuning in to Smiley for the first time, be prepared for plenty of laughs and surprise visits from fun guests, such as Smiley’s own father, a pastor who appears regularly to preach some wisdom to the crew. So don’t miss out on your daily dose of fun with Dave Smiley and the Smiley Morning Show!
