WFMS-95.5 FM is one of a handful of country music stations in Indianapolis. If you were to ask the disc jockeys and station personnel, they would tell you that they are “The Country Station” in all of the Indianapolis media. While they are not the biggest radio station in the Circle City, they have more listeners than most other stops on the radio dial.
WFMS has acquired so many loyal listeners because they have made it a mission of theirs to always put the local community first. 95.5 FM’s mixture of great country music and dedication to their fans has won them the distinction of “Station of the Year” several times by the Country Music Association.
Compared to most radio stations, WFMS-95.5 FM has what others would call a boring history. In the radio world that is never a bad thing, it shows great stability and staying power. 95.5 FM first took to the airways on March 17, 1957 with a format of what has been termed beautiful music. While you most likely won’t find a definition in Webster’s for such an expression, it must have been good, because it carried the station for nearly twenty years. In fact, the only major disturbance WFMS had to deal with in that time period was a fire in the studio that took them off the air for 57 hours in 1973.
It was in 1976 that country music in Indianapolis was first emitted from 95.5 FM’s frequency. Since then they have built a station that looks upon itself to keep local residents in the know of all the latest news and events in Indianapolis. Thanks to the WFMS community calendar, you can be sure you have found a great source for finding things to do in Indianapolis.
If you’re heading to one of the many Indianapolis bars but have no one to go with you, WFMS 95.5 FM has the answer. On their website they have setup the safe and interactive WFMS Dateline where you can meet other interested singles. Now you can meet someone new instead of having to fly solo in downtown Indianapolis. If you don’t feel like dancing, you can make reservations for a quiet diner for two in one of the countless restaurants in Indianapolis. You can even finish the night off with a romantic carriage ride in and around Monument Circle. The only downside is the carriages don’t have a radio in them. So, whether you want to find someone to share a horse and buggy with, or just hear a sad song about a man and his horse, WFMS is your country station here in Indy.
