WZPL-99.5 FM is one of the most popular radio stations in Indianapolis. Even if you don’t, a whole bunch of people you know tune in everyday to this giant of the Indianapolis media. 99.5 FM has a slogan that says they play “Today’s BEST Music.” Even though they are not lying, this statement is only partially true. While they do play some of the best music in Indianapolis, it is not just from today. WZPL’s music library is a cornucopia of different musical genres and eras. The station’s catalog ranges from the 60’s up to the songs that are hitting the Billboard charts for the first time this week.
It may seem like WZPL has been around forever but that is not the case. The station’s history starts on June 1, 1962 and at that time it was known as WSJM. During their first fifteen years of broadcasting, they had a jazz format that was mildly popular. In 1979 they changed both the station’s call letters and format. The new WIKS-FM went by the tag “Kiss 99,” while delighting, or horrifying their listeners with an all disco all the time play list. Much like the polyester suits that quickly fell out of favor from this time period, so did “Kiss 99.”
By 1983 WZPL-99.5 FM was up and running with a contemporary hits format. Except for a brief stint as a classic rock station in 1989, WZPL has been delivering adult contemporary music to any and all who care to listen. Today 99.5 FM not only has some of the most well known music on the radio, but some of the most famous people in Indianapolis on the air as well.
Every weekday morning Dave Smiley and crew are on the air from 5:00am until 10:00am bringing you “The Smiley Morning Show.” It is a variety show that has great fan interaction and a plenty of contests. You can win tickets to see the biggest names in the music industry that are stopping in Indy to play at the Verizon Wireless Music Center in Noblesville, or The Lawn at White River State Park. Some of their contest winners pick up a pair of tickets to Conseco Filedhouse to watch the Indiana Pacers heat up the hardwood. Maybe you’ll score a few seats in the Pepsi Coliseum over at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, and catch an Indiana Ice game.
Smiley is not the only WZPL-99.5 FM on-air force to be reckoned with. Kelly McKay holds down the afternoon spot on your ride home and always wants to know what her listeners think about her “daily dilemma.” In the evenings it is Kim Iverson‘s turn to give you her educated advice on such matters as pop music, relationships, love and food. With so many different personalities on the airways, and such an awesome mix of your favorite music, 99.5 FM will help get you through every part of your life, morning, noon or night.
