WKLU-101.9 FM, simply put, plays “The Greatest Hits of the 60’s and 70’s.” They are best known throughout Indianapolis by their catchy jingle, “Oldies 101.9,” which you are most likely reciting in your head right now. While the songs they play are much older than the station itself, its history is just as interesting as any other radio station’s in the Indianapolis media.
101.9 FM was started by self-proclaimed radio pirate Bruce Quinn in 1992. At that time the station was under the call letters WQFE and played golden oldies. It was not until 1999 that Quinn’s station would be known as WKLU-101.9 FM. While the call letters changed to something familiar, the music format was not. They started playing songs that other commercial stations did not play, mostly from “jam bands” in what they termed as a loose form of classic rock. However, WKLU was unable to roll with such music offerings and the station was sold to Russ Oasis.
The new owner opted to use a more commercially viable classic rock format but the station still had not hit its mark. December 4, 2007 is the day that 101.9 FM became the station we all know, playing oldies but goodies. Today, the station not only provides a soundtrack from days gone by, but is an important part of our community.
In a short period of time WKLU 101.9 FM has become a major source of events in Indianapolis, most of which display the our unique culture in Indianapolis. They are always holding contests to win tickets to see some of your favorite bands and performers. These concerts range form the huge national tours held at The Lawn at White River State Park, the Verizon Wireless Music Center in Noblesville or Conseco Fieldhouse, to the small intimate shows at the Murat Theatre in downtown Indianapolis or The Vogue Theatre in Broad Ripple. No matter if the show is big or small, it is sure to be fun for all.
Oldies 101.9 FM also has a great affiliation with one of the biggest sporting events in Indianapolis, which helps start the summer each year. While the Indianapolis 500 is only a one day happening, it is preceded by such events as the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon and the 500 Festival Parade. Both have become world class events in their own right and both are just a few of the must see attractions in Indianapolis. It doesn’t matter if you like to sing along with their classic hits while the windows are rolled up, or if you like to get down and party with WKLU at one of their public events, 101.9 FM has something for everyone.
