WJJK-104.5 FM is as familiar to radio listeners in Indianapolis as the music they play. They run a format of “classic hits,” which means they play all your favorites from the late 60’s through the early 80’s. And that means you will always hear a memory from the good times past. While other stations in the Indianapolis media play songs from the same era, most agree no one does it as well as 104.5 FM.
This station has seen more facelifts than a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. Most radio frequencies have changed both their formats and call letters several times in their station’s past, but 104.5 FM takes the cake. When they first took to the airways on September 25, 1950 they were known as WAJC, also, they were broadcasting from 91.3 FM on the dial back then.
It was not until 1956 that they took up residency on the 104.5 frequency. At that time they became the Butler University radio station, they remained the Bulldog’s radio station for nearly forty years. In 1993 they changed both their format and call letters again; this time they were known as WGRL and had gone Country. In 1997 they kicked the Country sound and started playing golden oldies.
Finally, in 2005 the station we have all come to know as WJJK-104.5 FM started playing our favorite classic hits. Today this station is home to more than just great music, they are a premier source for the latest happenings in Indy. Do you ever find yourself asking what is there to do in Indianapolis? Take a minute to tune in and the on-air personalities will tell you where the best Indianapolis attractions are. Sometimes you can even meet the WJJK crew because they are broadcasting live from that location.
104.5 FM is always holding contests for listeners to call in and win tickets to all kinds of concerts and events in Indianapolis. While most tickets are to shows at the Verizon Wireless Music Center in Noblesville or Conseco Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis, they support other local draws as well. During the summer months they are a great source for Indianapolis Indians baseball tickets.
