WXLW-950 AM is the home of sports talk radio in Indianapolis. The station is better known as XL 950 due to the size of the on-air host’s sports acumen. These guys eat, sleep and breathe Indianapolis sports. While XL’s main focus is on everything Indy, they do carry a few nationally syndicated sports shows, so their listeners are up to date on all the latest news around the country.
WXLW first signed on the air August 18, 1948 at the 1590 frequency on the AM dial. In 1955 they up and moved to their current home at WXLW-950 AM. From the station’s inception their programming was religious based and stayed that way for over 50 years. On July 8, 2002, they
switched to a sports talk format. 950 AM switched back and forth between ESPN and FOX Sports until January 7, 2008 when they found their permanent home with Sports News Radio; a twenty-four hours a day seven days a week sports programming company based out of California.
Today WXLW is the Indianapolis media‘s home to some of the best in both college and Indiana’s professional sports coverage. If you can’t make it to Victory Field to watch the Indianapolis Indians live there is no need to worry, XL 950 will have the play-by-play of every pitch all season long. WXLW also calls the Butler University football games, IUPUI Men’s basketball games and the IUPUI Women’s basketball games.
