Rathskeller Restaurant in Indianapolis, Indiana:
Restaurant Reviews & Restaurant Comments

No-Brainer
I love German food, and even more, I love German beer. This place was a no-brainer for me. The service at the bar was very helpful and friendly. The food was not the best German food in the world, but I would assume there is a dearth of German grub in Indianapolis so choosers can’t be beggy. Overall, the food is tasty, but not supremely satisfying…

Best beer garden in Indianapolis
…What comes to mind? Only the BEST beer garden in the Midwest. Okay, maybe not, but certainly the best in Indianapolis. It is a large out door party with long picnic tables, live music, fabulous pretzels. You’re always bound to run into someone you know as this is THE spot to go after a long day’s work in the Indianapolis metro area…

Cozy and quiet to …
…What’s remarkable about this place is how you can have a cozy private, relatively quiet dining experience then later in the night bounce over to the biergarten were Polka reigns supreme. Having said all this…it takes advantage of its size and uses it as cause for increased costs of food & grog. Portions here are even larger than the over-sized Indy portions….

High expectations but disappointed
I was told this was a must-visit in Indianapolis.  I had high expectations and was disappointed.  The food was good- but not as good as any other german restaurant I’ve been to. I was in for lunch on a roadtrip so i can’t say much about the beer, but as far as food, the best way to describe the menu is… confused?  perhaps a little neurotic. (See for yourself on their website-…)

Good atmosphere
I am slightly torn on this one because where the Rathskeller lacks in good food it makes up for it in atmosphere. In the biergartens, the yummy German beer flows like water and there is always a good band showcasing their talent onstage…

Lots of character
I am not a big fan of German food, but this place has a lot of character and is worth it just for that. If you like German food, you should really enjoy yourself.

Very good but expensive, good entertainment
The Rathskeller is the restaurant and beer pub in the HISTORIC Athenaeum — a former German club in Indianapolis. The beers are very good but a bit expensive for Indy but the keep good entertainment coming to the area. This also has the best outside beer garden in Indianapolis…

Not authentic
I was told to go here for when I go to a show at the Murat. It is within close distance to their, but slow service. We almost missed the beginning of Seinfeld due to the slow waiter. The food was okay, but didn’t seem to represent true German food.

Wildly entertaining Polka Boys
I don’t eat there, cuz despite my Bohemian lineage, I have a strict rule about not eating anything that ends in “wust” or “kraut”. But for those who like that kind of thing, I hear it’s excellent German food. I’ve only been of the Biergarten, which can be wildly entertaining after a few imports, esp. when the Polka Boys get going…

An intriguing treat
Stepping into the Rathskeller is a treat for the eyes, as well as the stomach. The room has fine art quality stained glass windows, an intriguing fireplace with dark sculptures and mottos in German, and other cultural pieces that contribute to the feeling of being in a small town in Germany instead of Indianapolis. The sausages and meats are top quality…

Great Euro-beer!
Great for lovers of beer! They have large and small bottles of tons of European gems (including my favorite – LaChouffe!). The Biergarden is for sure the place to be in Spring, Summer and early Fall. You always run into someone you know! Great place for pre-pub crawls, and to celebrate your love of great Euro-beer!
