The mission of the school is to engage the Indianapolis community through enhancing Indianapolis education by offering classes where people participate in art creation and observe art to enhance their appreciation of it.

The Indianapolis Art Center began as the Indianapolis Art Students League in 1934, during the Great Depression. Before they had a building to call home, Works Progress Administration artists came together to form a kind of collective where they could create art in a positive and supportive environment. For twenty six years the group carried on in this way, until they got their first building in Indianapolis downtown in 1961.
