Michael Graves, an Indianapolis native, is an American architect that has gained notoriety around the world for his designs. In recent years, he has certainly become one of Indianapolis’ most notable people. He has represented Indy on the world stage by placing his thumb print on various architectural landscapes.
Michael Graves grew up in the Circle City. He took advantage of Indianapolis arts and Indianapolis culture to form his artistic education. He attended Broad Ripple High School in Broad Ripple Village on the North-side of Indy. He graduated in 1950 and was witness to Indianapolis’ hay-day as Indianapolis business began to boom.
He moved to Ohio to attend the University of Cincinnati, where he earned his bachelors degree. This Hoosier boy made Indianapolis proud when he was accepted to Harvard University where he received his Master’s Degree. As he continued to build his architectural portfolio, he was invited to become the Robert Schirmer Professor of Architecture, Emeritus at Princeton University in New Jersey.
Graves has designed buildings all over the world. His work can be seen in countries as varied as Belgium and the Netherlands to Singapore and Taiwan. He has also left his mark on architectural masterpieces across the nation, from Portland, Oregon to Orlando, Florida to Houston Texas to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and many many more! He is a true Hoosier though as some of his most beautiful pieces reside in Fort Wayne, Indiana and his home town of Indianapolis.
Michael Graves is the designer of the Indianapolis Art Center and the Marilyn K. Glick School of Art. His designs have made the cultural complex at the Indianapolis Art Center one of the most stunning and revered in Indiana’s capitol city. Graves understands the value of the service this Indianapolis nonprofit organization provides to Indianapolis education.
In addition, Graves designed the NCAA Hall of Champions located on the Canal Walk and White River State Park in Indianapolis downtown. This tribute to Indianapolis sports has become a main Indianapolis attraction. The community and tourists alike have been enjoying the beauty of his eye for detail for decades. And they will continue to do so well into the future.
