Community and Worship
Christian Theological Seminary is located in the northern section of Indianapolis, several blocks from the Indiana State Fairgrounds. It’s near some other venerable Indianapolis colleges, including Butler University and Marian College. Christian Theological Seminary students can enjoy all the fun fruits of the Indianapolis lifestyle, like visits to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and guided tours of the many Indianapolis art galleries and museums, including the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Hoosier Salon, and the 4 Star Gallery. Students can even take a walk through the hotbed of Indianapolis society that is the Mass Ave cultural district. The school is within a short drive of downtown Indianapolis, so students can eat at many famous Indianapolis restaurants and visit lots of Indianapolis monuments and memorials. In addition, Christian Theological Seminary students can take part in worship at Christ Church Cathedral or simply visit the beautiful building whenever they feel like it.
Christian Theological Seminary students are active in over 40 different denominations and come from all walks of life. To meet the spiritual needs of such a diverse student body, Christian Theological Seminary sponsors the Sweeney Chapel, a sleek, clean worship center designed specifically to engage students of all denominations at Christian Theological Seminary. The chapel hosts different services on almost every day of the week. The Word and Table service, the most comprehensive worship service at Sweeney Chapel, features music, a message, and communion; the Word and Table service is offered on Tuesdays. On Wednesdays, the students themselves plan and implement the Evening Worship, and the Eucharist is celebrated on Thursdays. In addition, the school has some of the sweetest voices in Indianapolis music: the Cantors and the Gospel Choir.
After graduation, Christian Theological Seminary students aren’t simply left to fend for themselves. The CTS Alumni Association is heavily involved in the Indianapolis community, sponsoring many Indianapolis events and activities. The Alumni Association recruits members to the ministry and makes sure Christian Theological Seminary graduates continue to learn every day. In July, the Alumni Association will hold “Christian Theological Seminary Alumni Night Out”, a large gathering of all CTS alumni at Victory Field, home of the Indianapolis Indians. Also, in August the association will celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary at the Indianapolis Downtown Marriott with a concert by Indianapolis jazz violinist Cathy Morris, a regular entertainer at The Jazz Kitchen and the Slippery Noodle Inn.
Since it is the only college on the list of the 25 largest Indiana colleges and universities that only offers post graduate degrees, Christian Theological Seminary has fewer degree programs than most other schools on the list. It has a total of eight programs for students to choose from, organized into six major fields. CTS’s degree programs throw students in pursuit of these degrees: Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Psychotherapy and Faith, Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy, Master of Theological Studies, a dual major where students are awarded a Master of Divinity and a Master of Arts in Psychotherapy and Faith, another dual degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, and a Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Care and Counseling. This comprehensive list of programs makes Christian Theological Seminary one of the best seminary schools in the country.
In addition to its standard degree programs, Christian Theological Seminary also sponsors the unique “Faith Learning Initiative”. The initiative is a set of classes that students and non-students alike can take at Christian Theological Seminary. These courses promote a better understanding of the Christian faith and also other faiths in an attempt to foster empathy between religions. Christian Theological Seminary wants everyone, no matter what their faith, to understand the history behind their traditions and practices. Courses offered via the Faith Learning Initiative include “Abraham in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam”, “A Conversation with Mystic Poets”, “The Prophets of Isreal”, and a workshop in “Nonverbal Story Exploration”.
