There are also National Wine and Spirits Inc. locations in Michigan, and the company is the largest distributor of alchoholic beverages in the Midwest and one of the largest in the United States. They are also one of the largest private Indianapolis companies.
Nation Liquor Company originated in 1934, earning a liquor license after the Prohibition ended. The company was sold to its current owners in the early 1970s, and business has remained with them or their families ever since. In 1982 the company officially adopted the name National Wine and Spirits Inc. They’ve been located just south of downtown Indianapolis for more than 25 years.
In May 2009, National Wine and Spirits Inc. began protesting against the competing company Southern Wine and Spirits. The Indianapolis Business Journal ran a letter to the editor from National Wine and Spirits Inc. about the controversy. There is a battle between the local company and the larger national chain. The letter urged Hoosiers and local politicians to support local Indianpolis businesses. It has yet to be determined whether Southern Wine and Spirits will open up shop in the Circle City.
It’s estimated that the annual sales at National Wine and Spirits Inc. total more than seven hundred million dollars. This company supplies many Indianapolis events, parties and bars.
