French Lick Winery: Weekend Getaway to Wine Country

Since its inception in 1995, French Lick Winery has become one of the most popular destinations of its kind in Indiana. Located in the small, charming town of West Baden, it sits next to the newly renovated French Lick Resort and Casino. So when you decide to take a weekend gambling getaway, make sure to add this Indiana winery to your itinerary; no trip to French Lick is complete without it.

French Lick wines have amassed over 250 awards for their superior quality and taste in regional, national and international competitions. Despite the high number of other award-winning Indiana wineries scattered throughout the Hoosier state and Indianapolis, French Lick Winery is known for having some of the premier vineyards in the Midwest.

With a wide variety of wines available for tasting, you can sample everything, from the sweetest zinfandel to the driest chambourcin. Make sure you give the Heaven’s View Port a try; it’s a sweet dessert wine with a full-bodied bite.

Visitors to the Indianapolis attraction can not only expect to get their fill of sampling what the French Lick vineyards have to offer, they can glimpse the actual production in action through the tasting room windows. In addition, you can purchase wine by the glass, bottle, or case, and buying over six bottles will get you a quantity discount.

After you’ve had your fill of samples, you can browse the gift shop for unique gift ideas, including souvenir glasses, apparel, gift baskets, and the work of local photographer Harold Brown. And if wine isn’t your thing, you can do your own sampling; there are several varieties of gourmet coffees set out for your tasting pleasure.

You can also purchase unique cheeses and breads from the cafe, or settle in for a full meal. The Vintage Cafe can compare to any Indianapolis restaurant; it features a full menu of fresh-made Italian goodies, including toasted ravioli, organic pan bigio, authentic Italian pizza, and ziti alfredo. And make sure to save room for the cafe specialty, the wine cake. This tasty bundt cake is made from French Lick Red wine and sprinkled with powdered sugar, and is a perfect ending to your taste of Italy.

If you’re stopping in the French Lick Winery on your tour through the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail, you’ll be pleased with its distinctive qualities that set it apart from the other wineries of Southern Indiana. This unique trail features seven wineries and offers a unique tasting experience as well as a fascinating look at some of Indiana’s most beautiful scenery.

You can also find Frech Lick Winery represented at the Vintage Indiana Wine and Food Festival each June, held annually in downtown Indianapolis in beautiful Military Park. French Lick is one of 25 participating wineries that come together to bring Indy citizens the best wines that Indiana has to offer.

Whether you visit French Lick Winery in its unique home base next to French Lick Resort and Casino or get your fill of its wines at the Vintage Indiana Wine and Food Festival, you won’t want to miss out on the experience of tasting some of the best wines in the Midwest.
