Kokomo Grain Co. Inc.

For more than 50 years the Kokomo Grain Co. Inc. has been feeding Hoosier families. Each  year, 27 million bushels of corn, soybeans and wheat are grown and distributed to processors. The company has seen constant expansion since its opening in 1950, and it is now one of the largest Indiana private companies.

Kokomo Grain Co. Inc. had humble beginnings, which consisted of a country elevator with 12,000 bushels of storage capacity. Business started picking up in the 1970s, when the first unit train loading facilities in the United States were built at the Kokomo facility.

Over the years, the company has grown through acquisitions, and now has facilities in Amboy, Edinburgh, Greentown, Kokomo, Romney, Burlington and Winimac, Indiana. Tennessee is also home to many Kokomo Grain Co. Inc. properties, in Manchester, Decherd and Tullahoma. To reach the southeast United States, the company owns and operates rail loaders on short line railroads. Kokomo Grain Co. Inc. is also able to lease out their rail lines, and in 2009 they entered a 10 year contract for 60 miles of railroad with U.S. Rail Holdincs LLC.

In order to help customers and those interested in the grain industry, Kokomo Grain Co. Inc. has a very comprehensive Web site. Daily reports on grain prices and sales are posted on the site. Grain merchandiser Michael J. Silver leaves daily commentary and business news online, projecting and examining the successes and failures of the industry. The site also has a portion for national and regional newsletters about the agriculture industry. Weather reports for local farmers are posted online from an agriculture meteorologist. There is also additional market commentary, USDA reports and a calendar.

Safety precautions are a very important part of daily life on the Kokomo Grain Co. Inc. farms. One of the leading causes of death in the industry is through grain engulfment, which basically causes suffocation in the grain bins. The company has developed strict rules to avoid this life threatening risk. Each employee must 1. Never enter alone, 2. Follow entry permit, 3. Secure the lifeline and 4. Don’t become a statistic.

Company headquarters are located in Kokomo, Indiana, about 1 hour and 30 minutes north of I-465 in Indianapolis. Many foods, soft drinks and animal feeds that are sold throughout the Circle City contain Kokomo Grain Co. Inc. products.
