The Carmel Symphony Orchestra, is one of Indianapolis‘ many symphony orchestras that enrich Indianapolis arts and Indianapolis music. Located in Carmel, Indiana just north of Indianapolis downtown, the Carmel Symphony Orchestra is self-proclaimed as “kid friendly.” As opposed to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra or the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, screaming babies are welcomed by the CSO.
Throughout its season, the orchestra offers family oriented fun and is an organization where kids are totally welcome to come enjoy the music. The Carmel Symphony Orchestra has events such as “petting zoos,” where children are encouraged to pick up and try different instruments to get early exposure to music and a night called “Family Fun!” where families are encouraged to sit among the performers while they play to get an up close look at music as its made. The Carmel Symphony Orchestra is always looking for ways to make music tangible for kids and fun for the whole family. Could Indianapolis kids be any luckier?
At least one kid each year is a little luckier than the rest; the winner of the Young Artist competition hosted by the Carmel Symphony Orchestra gets to actually play with the professionals at the “Family Fun!” concert. On top of all of this, the Carmel Symphony Orchestra offers music education programs for elementary school students, a free outdoor concert on the Fourth of July, and has been invited several years running to play at the Penrod Art Fair.
The Carmel Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1976 as a volunteer orchestra. Over the past 30 years, the CSO has grown to be one of the most successful Indianapolis nonprofit organizations. Current members are both volunteers and professional musicians, some of which have been loyal to the orchestra for more than fifteen years. The musicians that compose the CSO make up one of the most interesting and by far one of the most family friendly Indianapolis performing arts organizations.
