Indiana Wind Symphony is a music ensemble dedicated to playing a wide variety of music in a professional season to bring Indianapolis a quality wind symphony. Prior to the ensemble’s formation, the music scene in Indianapolis felt lack luster to some musicians. They were not content to play only during the summer months, in outdoor venues, with the same old Sousa and Broadway hits that please the masses.
Fed up with being confined to such “light” music a few members of the music community came together to brainstorm new ways to create performance opportunities for themselves. They decided to form a symphony of their own that would have relative variety to what had been offered to the Indianapolis community thus far.
The Indiana Wind Symphony was founded in the autumn of 1997, as a way to give wind musicians more opportunities to perform a more varied repertoire of music all over the city. The symphony played its first performance in the winter of that year at the Indianapolis Artsgarden in downtown Indianapolis at Circle Center Mall. It was a smash success, showing Indy what the Indiana Wind Symphony was capable of and what it could possibly grow to be.
Their debut concert was in the spring of 1998. A sunny March day greeted the wind musicians as they filled the Church at the Crossing with the delicate sounds of wind turned music. Since then the Indiana Wind Symphony has grown to become a vital part of music and art in Indianapolis. They have played all over central Indiana and have graced the stages of many school programs including Butler University’s Sousa Fest in 2005 at Clowes Memorial Hall.
The Indiana Wind Symphony has a four fold mission statement:
- “to play artistic-level performances of significant band music”
- “to play during the school year for a more traditional concert season”
- “to play in concert halls rather than malls and parking lots”
- “to foster research in band history and to reflect that research in its performances”
They have done an excellent job of succeeding under these guidelines to date, striving to become one of Indianapolis best performing arts organizations.
Members of the symphony are from all walks of life. Ranging from professors at schools such as Butler University and Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis to valued members of the Indianapolis business community, this symphony is an interesting cross section of Indianapolis people.
Because of their wide membership base, the Indiana Wind Symphony has ties to many music organizations in the city including the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Carmel Symphony Orchestra, the Arts Council of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Symphonic Band, the Indianapolis Opera and many more.
