Milano Inn, Old World Italian Restaurant in Downtown Indianapolis

The Milano Inn Restaurant has been delighting Italian food lovers in downtown Indianapolis since 1934. Family-owned, this great Indianapolis restaurant offers sumptuous lunch and dinner selections every day, along with special events, meetings and parties, and a full catering service.

Obviously, these people are dedicated to their art. The Indianapolis Star newspaper called the Milano Inn a “culinary landmark,” and for good reason. They have developed, over the years, a wide and fierce cadre of loyal fans who not only love the luscious, authentic Old World culinary offerings, but who have also been instrumental in keeping the restaurant alive.

The story is an interesting one with a very happy ending. The Milano Inn restaurant opened to great favor and acclaim inside a historic building where they served food downstairs and rented out rooms upstairs. After the original founders passed away, in the late 1970’s, the place was in imminent danger of being turned into a parking lot. Local lovers of Milano’s Italian cuisine went to the new owner en masse and convinced him to start anew. Fired up by their passion, the new owner poured money and energy into the Milano, which emerged a sophisticated tribute to the Old World, with a new solarium and banquet and party rooms.

Special events are ongoing at this remarkable establishment, which offers seating for 400 guests in their various banquet and dining rooms. Family reunions, wedding dinners, celebrations of all kinds take place there, and many nearby Indianapolis businesses find the Milano’s customized meeting spaces and satisfying menu the perfect place to get the job done.

In the main dining room, diners will find a warm and comfortable ambiance to go with the Italian comfort food. Take special note of the colorful mural that runs around the top of all four walls. It was commissioned by the original owners, and each scene tells a story that transports the viewer back to simpler times in Old Italia.

Over the years, the Milano has developed some intriguing and popular home-made products that they sell locally. The latest such offering is the new Milano Inn spaghetti sauce, which lucky Hoosiers can find in many local markets, or at the restaurant itself. A case of twelve jars of the house-lable sauce is $39, while a jar goes for just under four dollars.

Today, the Milano Inn is renowned not only for its delicious Italian entrees, such as Chef Vickie’s rich Fettucine Alfredo and Shrimp Parmigiana, but also for its old-world style of excellence in service. Milano’s Inn is a way of life for many, and will no doubt dominate the Indianapolis downtown restaurant scene for many generations to come.
