The Iron Skillet Restaurant: Family-Style Upscale

One of the hottest upscale restaurants in Indianapolis is The Iron Skillet, located less than 10 miles from downtown Indianapolis, inside the I-465 loop. For a night of home cooking without the maintenance, visit The Iron Skillet. For more than 50 years, the restaurant has been a rich part of Indianapolis society, culture and community.

Perhaps the most popular dish at The Iron Skillet is their savory fried chicken. All of the delicious entrees are served with those family style sides that everyone loves, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, green beans, biscuits, the works. Just when customers think they’re stuffed full, servers bring out ice cream desserts with an assortment of sundae toppings. Customers may also order wine and spirits from the extensive wine list and full bar. Meals are reasonably priced between $16 and $25. A complete menu of all entree options is posted on The Iron Skillet Web site.

Reservations at The Iron Skillet are not required, but it may be difficult to snag a table without one. The restaurant has a very tight schedule, only open from 5 p.m, to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and Noon to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. Because everything is served family style, this Indianapolis restaurant is perfect for large groups, parties and events.

The Iron Skillet has a long history in Indy, stretching back farther than its 1956 opening. Before it was a restaurant, The Iron Skillet was a mansion home built on August Wacker’s farm. When the farm was sold, the property was converted into Highland Countryclub and Clubhouse. During World War II the Wacker home was used for military purposes, and in 1956 it was bought by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kelso. That year, the couple opened their down-home restaurant, but they wished to preserve the charming history in the Wacker home. The building is an important part of Indianapolis history. When the Kelsos were ready to retire in 1996, they sold The Iron Skillet to its current owner Ronald Torr.

The property still sits between beautiful green golf courses. The quant restaurant is near the Marian College campus, which makes it a great stop for student and faculty. It’s also just a few minutes north of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, making it perfect for a night out during the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race (Indy 500). Because of its close proximity to several Indianapolis attractions, The Iron Skillet is located right in the middle of all the action in Indianapolis nightlife.
