NoExit Theater Company is making a splash in Indianapolis theater, living by the mantra “imagination without boundaries” as they explore the artistic process. The company was founded in 2004 by Butler University alumni Nicole Gatzimos and Ronald Gilliam. Since its flagship production in the fall of 2004, the company has struggled through some ups and downs, but continues to maintain excellence and the spirit of experimentation in all that it produces.
NoExit Theater Company has produced over a dozen shows in different venues around the Circle City including the Wheeler Art Center, the Phoenix Theater, Butler University’s Theater, the LAMP Fine Art Gallery, the Indianapolis Art Center, the Morris-Butler House Museum, on the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and at Crown Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery. Because they have no permanent space of their own they are forced to reinvent nontraditional theater spaces, transforming them into performance experiences and exhilarating audiences.
In recent years, NoExit Theater Company has been a force at the indyFringe Festival producing the smash hit Breathe!, an original production based on Euripides story of Hippolytus and Sarah Kane’s Phaedra’s Love. Breathe! is a perfect example of the innovative ideas driving the artistic vision at NoExit Theater Company.
By blending classic, traditional stories with contemporary plays, NoExit Theater Company dissects the very heart of theater by exploring where it has been and where it is going. Similar artistic ideas could be seen in their production of Eleanora based on Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and performed at the Victorian mansion, the Morris-Butler House Museum. This original production received rave reviews in NUVO Newsweekly and The Indianapolis Star.
While NoExit Theater Company may not have the financial power of bigger Indianapolis performing arts groups like the Indiana Repertory Theater, the Phoenix Theater or even Beef and Boards Dinner Theater, they more than make up for that with originality and ingenuity. If you are looking for a fun way to support a deserving Indianapolis nonprofit organization or if you just want a thought provoking night out, check out what NoExit Theater Company is up to.
