In Indianapolis, there’s always something going on. Whether it’s an Indianapolis Colts pre-game party, a dance marathon at an Indianapolis bar, or a wedding uniting two residents of the Circle City, there’s always some sort of Indianapolis event taking place. But there’s nothing worse than an event with no music and no dancing.
That’s where The Souled Out Band comes in. The Souled Out Band is an Indianapolis music group that is one of the top cover and party bands in the city. Their expert musicianship, superb horn section, and supreme affability make them one of Indy‘s finest music groups. They have performed at a number of music venues in Indianapolis and around Indiana, including the Indianapolis Central Library, the Downtown Marriott, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and the Indiana Roof Ballroom, in addition to weddings, parties, and fundraisers in Muncie, Greencastle, Carmel, and Fort Wayne.

A lot of cover bands in Indianapolis have set lists made up of several dozen songs, but The Souled Out Band goes above and beyond. The list of songs they can perform stretches out forever and includes such popular artists as The Blues Brothers, Tower of Power, KC and the Sunshine Band, Carlos Santana, Sly and the Family Stone, and Marvin Gaye. Most of their songs are classic funk, swing, or R&B hits, though they do feature several songs in different genres, like “Angel of Harlem” by U2 and “Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf.
Much like The Park Avenue Band, The Souled Out Band is comprised of nine members, all of which are experienced, professional musicians. Not only do they excel at their various instruments, they are also a lively group that loves to get the crowd involved, a must for any party band.
The group features Dave Wisler and Bill Pritchett on trumpet, Jeff Farber on bass, Ben Williams on drums, L.J. Mechem on the keys, Mike Ryan playing both tenor and baritone sax, Jeff Gardner on guitar, and Allen Burke and Clay Arnett on lead vocals. Arnett also mans various percussion instruments within the The Souled Out Band, and Farber, Williams, Mechem, and Gardner all do double duty as backup vocalists.
All the members of The Souled Out Band have a long history in music. Bill Pritchett graduated from Ball State University with a music major, has played with a huge amount of orchestras and brass sections, and has been on the staff for a number of summer jazz camps, including the Purdue University Summer Jazz Camp. Clay Arnett is a classically trained percussionist who has played with Lonnie Lester and The Temptations.
Allen Burke studied piano and trumpet at Butler University at a young age, and has performed and written for The Spinners, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, and many more. Mike Ryan was born in South Bend and also attended Ball State University; in his long career, he has played with December’s Children and The Other Five, in addition to opening for a huge stable of well known acts, including The Who and Cream. Benjamin Williams is an accomplished drummer who has performed with Chicago Joe Jones, Spoonful, and many others.
L.J. Mechem, the pianist, also graduated from Ball State University and owns the largest guitar strap manufacturer in the nation, LM Straps. Dave Wisler has been playing music since he was only three years old; he’s performed with a variety of artists, including Wayne Newton, Frank Mantooth, and Sandy Patty. Jeff Farber is an aggressive bassist who claims a variety of influences; he’s an art teacher at Northside Middle School and an instructor at Ball State University. Jeff Gardner is an accomplished studio and touring musician who has played with The Jubal Band and The Persuaders.
Together, these talented musicians form The Souled Out Band, and it’s unlikely you’ll find any other group in Indianapolis with such a great combination of chemistry, talent, and professionalism.
