The Heidelberg Haus Restaurant and Bakery is a one-of-a-kind cafe and restaurant in Indianapolis on the east side, comprised of a full-scale German deli, bakery and gift shop. There is no other dining establishment even remotely like the Heidelberg Haus in Indy, possibly in the entire Midwest. For one reason, it is the most authentic of German restaurants. For another, it is chock full of simply delightful German gift items, antiques and much, much more.
Pretty little cafe tables are scattered throughout a massive store containing what just might be the biggest collection of German items for sale in the nation. An entire wall, for example, is given over to the Heidelberg collection of beer steins, and another wall is covered with intricate cuckoo clocks. Hundreds of puppets, dolls and mobiles are suspended from the ceiling and decorate what would otherwise have been the only empty space in the building. The deli section of the restaurant snuggles in among all the German paraphernalia, and everything looks like Christmas decided to live in the middle of Indiana.
Inside the jumbly warehouse-bakery-cafe is a space dedicated as the Antique Bakery Museum, where you can get lost wandering around to see all the hundreds of authentic, fascinating pieces of bakery memorabilia from long ago. Another enormous section contains fascinating restaurant and food items in the Heidelberg Haus Restaurant’s German Grocery. They have an intriguing antique section huddling in behind a vintage counter-service bar and still more cafe tables cling to their designated spaces among the gifts and other colorful items, all straight from Germany. Their Springerle molds, porcelains and German state crests collections are not to be missed.
The bakery is one of the main reasons for being for the Heidelberg Haus, so you won’t want to miss the bakery showcases and all the gift items in that area too. They have recently installed a brand new baking facility, where they not only churn out tons of mouth-watering German pasteries every day, but lots of gorgeous wedding cakes as well.
The restaurant’s menu, you say? It’s a lot like the place itself, crowded with items that look so fascinating you will want to try each and every one of them. Traditional, delicious German fare is offered, alongside the irresistible bakery items.
The German heritage has exerted a profound effect on Indianapolis history. Through it, many wonderful traditions, groups and charitable organizations in Indianapolis, such as the Athenaeum in downtown Indianapolis, have come about, and they have changed the face and tenor of the way Hoosiers live. Heidelberg Haus Bakery can rightfully claim to have a hand in the way the Indianapolis community feels about the Old Country, since a single visit will transport you and all your senses there.
Just on the eastern border of the Circle City, Indianapolis, is the Heidelberg Haus Restaurant and Bakery. In this case, the name is quite misleading, because the Heidelberg Haus is an enticing German bakery, ja ja, but it is also so much more.
