Writer’s Center of Indiana

The Writer’s Center of Indiana is an Indianapolis organization committed to enhancing written and verbal communication as well as supporting Hoosier writers. Indianapolis has a rich tradition of producing famous writers. Booth Tarkington, James Whitcomb Riley, and Kurt Vonnegut are all sons of Indianapolis. The Writer’s Center of Indiana nurtures local writers and provides opportunities for Indianapolis education as a way to keep this tradition alive.

The Writer’s Center of Indiana is housed in the Cultural Complex at the Indianapolis Art Center in Broad Ripple Village just north of Indianapolis downtown. In their space there, they offer a variety of classes for youth and adults to improve their writing skills and to discover writing as a therapeutic and creative outlet. With classes in poetry or prose, novels or short stories, mystery, memoirs, proof reading and editing, there is something for writer’s of all levels at the Indiana Writer’s Center.

This Indianapolis nonprofit organization is committed to enriching the Indianapolis community one writer at a time. Founded in 1979, the Writer’s Center of Indiana is the only comprehensive community based writing organization in the state of Indiana.

In addition to offering over 80 classes each year, the Writer’s Center devotes itself to special projects annually. They work with senior citizens at the Indianapolis Senior Center and host a workshop at the Indianapolis Juvenile Correction Facility. These on site workshops focus on memoir writing as a tool for therapy and stress relief.

The Writer’s Center of Indiana also hosts numerous other events. In the past, they have collaborated with Butler University’s Writers Studio, Purdue University and the Indianapolis Public Library downtown to bring the public free events. These free Indianapolis events focus on writing education and connecting local authors with an audience. Thy are always on the list of fun things to do in Indianapolis.
