March to the Beat of Their Drums: The DCI World Championships

Starting this Wednesday the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium will play host to the DCI World Championships. Drum Corps International is a nonprofit organization that has provided countless opportunities for students from all over the world to be part of something bigger than themselves, and has for over three decades now. There are competitors from coast to coast that will compete in the DCI World Championships this weekend in downtown Indianapolis.

The DCI World Championships are the culmination of some 100 events that take place throughout the country from June to mid-August. The more than 20 corps that will participate in this weekend’s Indianapolis competition are comprised of ensembles of percussionists, brass musicians and dancers that can number up to 150 individuals. The competitors, who range in age from 14-22, are all students who have dedicated themselves to their respective corps, which practice up to ten hours a day.

While Lucas Oil Stadium’s turf is usually reserved for the pinnacle of Indianapolis sports, the Indianapolis Colts, this weekend’s DCI World Championships will display equal parts of athleticism and artistry that will make any football fan sit and take notice. Hoosiers from all over the state usually flock to the Circle City for Indianapolis events such as the Indy 500 or the AllState 400 at the Brickyard but tickets and crowds can make it tough for the whole family to attend. The DCI World Championships here in the state capital of Indiana offer general admission tickets for $20 a piece. For the best seats in the house get there early because a crowd of over 30,000 is expected.
