While Motus Dance Theatre is not the only dance company in Indianapolis, quite frankly their work is the most captivating. Motus has built a reputation within the Indianapolis arts community as a dance company not only willing to collaborate with other artists but eager to do so. Motus Dance Theatre performs unique pieces that often incorporate the venue in which they are performing in, guaranteeing originality. This helps encapsulate the audience in the movement and gives the feeling as though they are also part of the performance.
Motus Dance Theatre first took to the stage in December of 2003 with the performance piece Ignitio at Marian College‘s Peine Theatre. Since then Motus has continued delighting crowds throughout Indiana; always leaving their audiences feeling as though they have experienced the piece as opposed to just watching it. Never feeling they will ever stop learning, one of the pillars of the Motus mission statement is to assist its dancers in the study of their craft.
To stay at the top of their profession in terms of both dancing and choreography, Motus uses guest artists for dance intensives as well as to choreograph some of their performance pieces. Classes are taught year round at the Motus Dance Theatre studio, which is located in the Fountain Square cultural district in downtown Indianapolis. These classes are not only for the benefit of the dancers of Motus but are open to the public and serves as tools for community outreach.
While the core of dancers has stayed much the same since 2003, auditions are held before each project in an effort to utilize the strengths of new dancers in the Indianapolis performing artscommunity. Many of these dancers recognize the unique experience that dancing with Motus provides and appear in multiple shows. The fact that this company is not associated with just one form of dance such as ballet, modern or jazz gives them greater creative license. As well as allowing them to draw from the diverse dancing backgrounds of each of its members, all of whom consider dance a defining feature of their lives.
Motus Dance Theatre has performed throughout the Circle City at such venues as the Indianapolis Artsgarden, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis Art Center, the Central Library downtown, Broad Ripple High School, University of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Herron School of Art and Design. In addition, since 2006 Motus has taken part in the annual indyFringe Festival and has become one of the must-see shows everyone talks about. A Motus performance should not only be enjoyed when you happen to come upon one but should be actively sought out; for they are pure art in motion and well worth your effort.
