Indiana Convention Center Expansion

Overflow events in Indianapolis‘ fabulous Indiana Convention Center have made an impression on the powers that be. By 2010, a huge expansion of the facility will be completed, almost doubling existing exhibit space.

The glitzy new Lucas Oil Stadium stands to benefit greatly from the expansion. Nearly 180,000 square feet will augment an already enormous area, placing the combined Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium on the list of the twenty largest such facilities in the nation, at number seventeen.

Some 342,000 square feet of convention exhibit space will be added on to the convention center and stadium, making the combined total 745,000 square feet. The Lucas Oil Stadium, already a world-class sport facility and home to the Indianapolis Colts, will be connected via a street-level walkway to the convention center when the project is finished. And the mega-facility itself will be number one in the nation among similar facilities, for connecting to the most hotel rooms (4700) via skywalks.

This is the fourth expansion performed on the Indiana Convention Center since 1972. Its current size will be increased in square footage from 63,000 to 254,000, including exhibit space, pre-function space and meeting rooms.

The finished Indiana Convention Center will offer:

  • 566,600 square feet of contiguous exhibit halls among 11 halls
  • 71 meeting rooms totaling 113,302 square feet
  • 3 ballrooms totaling 62,173 square feet
  • 48 docks
  • Skywalks to twelve hotels in Indianapolis
