DePauw University, an Indiana college located in Greencastle, Indiana, will be celebrating the 125th anniversary of its School of Music with a performance by the Percussion Plus Project, a musical ensemble that is unique to the school. The concert will take place on August 30 at the Thompson Recital Hall on DePauw’s campus, just south of Indianapolis.
The Percussion Plus Project is a program unique to DePauw; it was founded in Prague in 1993 by DePauw professor Amy Lynn Barber. Not surprisingly, the group focuses on percussion-based pieces, a rarity in classical music, where timpani drums and cymbals are generally used for emphasis rather than as primary instruments. Several of the pieces this Indianapolis music group performs were written expressly for the group, and the Percussion Plus Project is the only such orchestra that focuses solely on percussion pieces.
The four pieces the group will be performing for the August 30th season opener, George Crumb’s An Idyll for the Misbegotten, André Jolivet’s Suite en Concert, Claude Debussey’s Syrinx, and Edgard Varèse’s Density 21.5, are unique in that they combine the driving power of percussion with the smooth trill of flutes. The Percussion Plus Project often makes use of accomplished accompanists; the August 30th concert is no different. Anne Reynolds will be the guest flutist for the Percussion Plus Project, bringing her many years of performance experience to the table.
Reynolds, a graduate of Indiana University, is a freelance musician; the list of Indianapolis musical organizations that have made use of her talents is long and distinguished. She is currently the primary flutist for the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, but she has also played with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and on countless studio recordings and Broadway productions.
This combination of modern and classic pieces performed by a unique organization and a veteran flutist is an Indianapolis event you won’t want to miss.
