An Evening of Stories and Song with Kevin Kling and Simone Perrin is a must see show at the indyFringe Theater Festival happening now in Indianapolis downtown. This gem is playing at the Phoenix Theater’s Cabaret Theater sponsored for the 2009 indyFringe by Storytelling Arts of Indiana. By meandering between wonderfully funny stories told by Kling and hypnotizing music from Perrin’s accordion, the two have the audience eating out of the palms of their hands.
Kevin Kling immediately acknowledges, kids and teaches about his physical impairments with a gnarled tongue and cheek sense of humor. His spunkiness and innate nerdiness make him endearing and extremely lovable. His frankness about his own imperfections leads the way for meditation on the imperfections we all share. He is self described as “the
kind of guy that wears socks with sandals just because I know it pisses people of,” and for that I want to listen to him speak for hours.
Simone Perrin pairs her music well with his perspective on the world. She is sexy, sly, silly, and sassy. Her wonderfully odd voice rings clearly as she flirts with the audience. Throughout the show she hardly speaks, only to sing and play her instrument, as music is her only means of communicating. This makes her totally enchanting.
The two pair well. They speak for each other and for the whole audience, as they urge everyone to “give into the journey.” Beautifully written and performed, this indyFringe Festival show is among the best. By simply being honest about themselves and the world around them, Kling and Perrin have the whole room laughing, crying, gasping and clapping.
