7 (x1) Samurai is a gem of the 2009 indyFringe Theatre Festival; it plays all week at Theatre on the Square on Mass Ave, and is a must see! Indianapolis is lucky to have so many wonderful artists from around the world visit and perform, but David Gaines might just be the coolest of them all.
David Gaines, the writer, director, and sole actor of the piece has impressive credentials. As a former faculty member of the Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris, France, Gaines has studied with the master of movement and mime himself. Since returning to the United States, he has performed and taught all around the country, sharing with the nation his unbelievable talent for mime.
7 (x1) Samurai is an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. Kurosawa’s three hour masterpiece has been redone in various ways, such as the Hollywood western The Magnificent Seven. But Gaines’ interpretation is perhaps the most unique. Through clowning, mime, and his own vocal soundscape, Gaines takes the audience through this Japanese western with the physical humor of Charlie Chaplin and Bugs Bunny combined.
A perfect show for all ages, Gaines’ version of this classic tale rises to new heights as he jumps from character to character, donning masks and inhabiting a multitude of characters all at once. It is a treat to have such a talented and renowned artist playing in Indy. No less at the indyFringe Festival, where theater is accessible to all.
Do not miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to see a performer from the Lecoq school. The IndyFringe Theatre Festival is filled to the brim with surprises.
