Big Car Gallery is set to host its annual Masterpiece in a Day contest this Saturday, September 19 in the Fountain Square cultural district. This long running free art and writing contest is set to take place starting Saturday morning at 9:00 am, with day of registration ending at 11:30 am. The contest is presented as part of the Fountain Square Art Fair, sponsored by the Fountain Square Merchant Association and Southeast Neighborhood Development.
Each work must be completed during contest hours and in the Fountain Square cultural district. Completed entries are due at 3:30 pm for judging. This year’s art judges are the renowned architect Mike Halstead, SullivanMunce Cultural Center Art Director Cynthia Young and Herron School of Art and Design sculpture professor Holly Streekstra.
The writing judges are Fountain Square writer and Urban Times contributor Connie Zeigler and NUVO Newsweekly critic and poet Dan Grossman. Each panel of judges will decide on and announce the winners of the contest by 4:30 pm.
This year’s art contest has two entry categories: 2D art (that is predominantly two-dimensional including paintings, photos, collages, drawings; work on paper, canvas, board etc.) and 3D art (work that isn’t 2D- examples include 3D pieces, sculpture, video, installation, site-specific work, performance, conceptual art).
You could win big this year. The overall Best in Show winner of the art contest wins $1,200. Two category winners pick up $600 each, and runners up in each category get $300 each. The overall winner can’t also be a category winner. The writing contest features a single combined contest for prose writers and poets. The overall winner receives $600, with the second-place writer taking $300 and third place picking up $100.
