The Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis downtown is celebrating Midwest art with a temporary exhibit, Making it in the Midwest: Artists Who Chose to Stay. You can catch the widest collection of Midwest art ever seen through October 18th, 2009. This exhibit explores the obstacles to making it as an artist in the Midwest. It brings together a historical array of Midwest art, many of which come from private collections and have not been seen publicly for years. In addition, you can see some of the most inspirational contemporary Hoosier artists, as the struggle continues to find a foothold in for Midwest art.
The historical art in this exhibit comes from The Society of Western Artists, a group of artist in Indianapolis, Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and Detroit. The Society of Western Artists organized in the late 19th century to bring Midwest art “before the public in a more satisfactory manner.” Together they organized annual touring exhibitions throughout the Midwest. Making it in the Midwest at the Indiana State Museum features 50 of these historic works including paintings by the Hoosier Group, who were instrumental in the society.
Making it in the Midwest: Artists Who Chose to Stay also features contemporary Indianapolis art from Hoosier artists, who love their home too much to leave. 20 artists from across the state of Indiana have weathered the storm of creating Midwest art. Their work is now contributing to Indianapolis art as they are shown as part of this landmark exhibition.
