Indianapolis kids display their work at the Indianapolis Museum of Art; Smuggling Daydreams into Reality: Yesterday, Today and Forever showcases young Hoosiers. This installation in the Star Studio features short films produced by Indianapolis high school students through January 18, 2010. The work by these youngsters is the product of their participation in the IMA’s Museum Apprentice program.
Under the guidance of filmmaker Julie Dash, the students worked for six months exploring the idea of smuggling creative ideas into reality. Their films focus on their discoveries, obstacles, and successes. In addition, Smuggling Daydreams into Reality: Yesterday, Today and Forever shows a short film that chronicles the process these Indianapolis students under went in their quest to smuggle dreams.
As part of the exhibition, there is a drop in art studio space. Visitors can contribute their own representation of the past, present and future to a “dream-network.” The drop in art space is open on Saturdays from Noon to 4:00 pm. Create your own work of art to be displayed at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Find a way to be a part of the Indianapolis art scene at the Star Studio.
The Museum Apprentice program is an opportunity for high school students to be paid as part time employees of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Students learn job skills by working alongside and interacting with Indianapolis museum employees. In addition, this year’s group learned about Indianapolis media through intensive media and technical training from Rogelio Garza and Louis Ly. This collaboration came from the IMA’s relationships with FIRME Productions, Latino/a Youth Collective and the School of Informatics at Indiana University – Purdue Univeristy Indianapolis.
Students from central Indiana participated in this years Museum apprentice program. They represented Ben Davis High School, Broad Ripple High School, The Independence Academy of Indiana, The Indiana School for the Deaf, Northwest High School and Warren Central High School.
