Indianapolis sports will become awash with possibilities today, Saturday, September 18, 2009. Thanks to Indianapolis‘ IUPUI, Indianapolis downtown will see a lot of floating, gliding and paddling activity on the Canal at White River State Park. Nearly 50 teams, made up of four rowers each, will participate in a relay race, starting on the north end of the canal. The First Annual IUPUI Regatta is the brainchild of Robert Scheele, as student at IUPUI. Powers that be like the idea for its potential to become a signature Indianapolis event akin to the annual “Little 500” race held in May, presented by Indiana University. All proceeds will go to scholarships, and organizers anticipate that the camaraderie that emerges will be just as valuable.
Along with the big canoe regatta, many festive activities will also be presented. Two Indianapolis bands will play, a beer garden will be set up, food vendors are expected to set up shop from some of the nearby Indianapolis restaurants and Hoosier families in the Circle City are invited to participate in events created just for them.
Free of charge, the Regatta on the Canal this Saturday starts at 11 am and goes till 6 pm. All are welcome to enjoy the summer while it lasts in a truly unique manner.
