Though Indianapolis plays host to a large number of modern Indianapolis bands, live music, and other Indianapolis events, the Circle City also has a strong foundation in the finer side of classical music, like the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Opera. One of the more distinguished members of the Indianapolis arts scene is the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.
The International Violin Competition of Indianapolis (IVCI) brings virtuosos from all over the world to Indy to compete for first prize and worldwide recognition. It’s a 17 day spectacular that turns the international classical music spotlight on the Indianapolis music scene.
Though the actual competition won’t take place until September of 2010, Indianapolis can start to see the fruits of the competition tomorrow with the opening of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis’ Laureate Series. The Laureate Series comes through Indianapolis every year and keeps the beauty and precision of the competition alive.
This year, the Laureate Series will feature both guests artists and winners from previous International Violin Competitions. The season opener, occuring tomorrow, September 22, promises to be a real delight; the concert will be headed by Jaime Laredo, the IVCI president, the Miami String Quartet with former prize winner Ivan Chan, and Ida Kavafian, a silver medalist from 1982. Accompanying them will be Steven Tenenbom and Sharon Robinson.
These distinguished musicians will be playing selections from Handel, Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Ginastera. The concert will take place at the Indianapolis Civic Theatre within Marian College, an Indianapolis school. Tickets are $22 for adults and $17 for senior citizens. This is a great opportunity for budding Indianapolis musicians to experience the masters without spending too much money; student tickets are only $10.
So if you’d like to get a taste of the excitement, culture, and great passion the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis has to offer, be sure to attend their 2009-2010 Laureate Series season opener at the Indianapolis Civic Theatre!
